Wicked Intentions by Elizabeth Hoyt

From the author:

Infamous for his wild, sensual needs, Lazarus Huntington, Lord Caire, is searching for a savage killer in St. Giles, London’s most notorious slum. Widowed Temperance Dews knows the area like the back of her hand—she cares for its children at the foundling home her family established. Now that home is at risk…

Caire makes a simple offer—in return for Temperance’s help navigating the perilous alleys of St. Giles, he will introduce her to high society so that she can find a benefactor for the home. But Temperance may not be the innocent she seems, and what begins as a cold bargain soon falls prey to a passion neither can control—and may well destroy them both.

The first novel in Elizabeth Hoyt’s Maiden Lane series gives us historical romance with equal emphasis on the historical aspects of life in 1730 London, as well as the romance that we readers crave. I thought Wicked Intentions was a nice set up for what is sure to be an entertaining series.

Temperance and Caire (he was most referred to in the book by his title, so that’s what I’m going with. Seems weird to me to call him Lazarus!) meet in an unlikely circumstance: she works in the slums of London helping orphaned children and runs into him while he is trying to track down a murderer. It’s a unique plot that drew two characters together in a way that isn’t normally found in most historical romances.

The mystery, romance, struggles surrounding the foundling house, and the usual trials and tribulations of being involved in London society at that time, provide for an enjoyable read that I am confident will become even more so throughout the rest of the series.

In this novel, we’ve been introduced to many storylines that I’m just dying to learn more about. Temperances siblings alone are just waiting to have their turn in the spotlight – Winter and Silence, as well as some aristocracy like Lady Batten and St. John, and of course, the “mysterious masked avenger” the Ghost of St. Giles. Who is he, and what are his intentions with carrying out this crusade?

Wicked Intentions is definitely a novel worth checking out, and I for one and very excited to see what else will happen in the Maiden Lane series.
